To celebrate 25 years of Dentistry magazine, we’ve asked leading dental professionals for their game-changing innovation that shaped their career. In this article we asked Eimear O’Connell what her game-changing product is.
Eimear received her dental degree from the University of Edinburgh.
She has run her own private dental practice in Edinburgh since 1996.
She received her MFGDP and FFGDP from the Royal College of Surgeons London and her diploma of implant dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
In 2015 Eimear’s practice won the Best Patient Care award.
Eimear is an international speaker and opinion leader for Dentsply Sirona with a particular interest in digital dentistry.
She has been using CEREC technology since 2008 and believes increasing the success of her practice has much to do with the implementation of digital dentistry.
Eimear is leading the way for women in dentistry.
She is the first woman to ever be president elect of the Association of Dental Implantology and works hard to promote women in dentistry in Scotland, England and Wales.
She was also the first female dentist in the UK to gain her implant diploma from The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.
CEREC
For me, even though CEREC technology is more than 30 years old, this piece of equipment – well it’s several pieces of equipment really – is the most ground-breaking in terms of delivery of dentistry.
Now, patients can have a guided implant placed and restored in one day under the correct biological conditions.
Patients also love seeing their own dentition in HD and full colour.
This insight therefore allows them to make informed choices about managing their dentition.
CEREC technology allows both the patient and the clinician to make most effective use of their time by allowing the manufacture of single and multiple restorations in one visit.
Constructing everything on site from inlay/onlays to three-unit bridges is possible.
Implant placement using guided surgery can also be planned and delivered.
The most beneficial aspect of using the technology in my practice is the concept of one numbing.
If the correct anatomy exists, I can extract the tooth and place the implant in a single visit, requiring local anaesthetic, and then either use a temporary crown or customised healing abutment for the healing phase.
Eight to 12 weeks later the implant can be restored in a single visit with a screw retained crown and we rarely need to use any anaesthetic for this stage.
As you might imagine, this improves the patient perception of the implant journey.
It acts as a driver for new patients for this type of treatment.
This approach reduces the ‘fear factor’ by allowing the patient to see what we diagnose and also they don’t need to have an impression taken or indeed have multiple injections.
All in all, due to the patient’s better experience, this tool has allowed Bite Dentistry to keep growing.
