Dental implant training is coming to Portsmouth through CPD courses at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy.
This series of short courses will give dentists and dental care professionals a strong foundation knowledge for dental implants.
As a result they focus on practical skills including impression taking, the fitting of implant restorations and general implant care.
‘The one disappointment seen with many courses is the low percentage of course participants who sit final assessments,’ Dr Peter Sanders, who helped develop the course, said.
‘The reason is that implantology is not within the scope of their daily practice.
‘And so involvement in the course is reduced to an academic exercise.
‘(This) is an inexpensive modular introductory programme to help colleagues start introducing implantology to their patients.
‘Dental implants can benefit participants’ patients and their practice.
‘And so I’m very excited to be able to develop this series of CPD courses at the Dental Academy.’
‘Excellent opportunity’
The courses aim to give dentists the confidence and skills to offer dental implants to their patients.
Participants will learn when implant treatment is appropriate and how to provide simple implant treatments.
A suitable surgical partner/mentor will support participants, allowing implants to become a part of their scope of practice.
‘I’m very enthusiastic about this new initiative,’ Professor Chris Louca, University of Portsmouth Dental Academy director, said.
‘This will create an excellent opportunity for dentists and dental care professionals, both within and beyond our region, to access first class implant dentistry training.
‘As a result this offers patients broader and more contemporary options for their restorative dental care.’
Modern dental training
The University of Portsmouth Dental Academy is a modern, primary-care based school.
