Nilesh Parmar discussing Clinisept+

We speak to Nilesh Parmar about Clinisept+ Mouthwash and how it is helping keep his implant patients stain free.

How long have you been using Clinisept+ Mouthwash for?

I think it’s been close to a year, maybe 18 months. Yes, we’ve been very pleased with it.

I started using it as routine. We previously gave patients a bottle of another mouthwash after oral surgery and implant procedures. But one of the problems we had was that patients were coming back with staining.

Once we started using Clinisept+, we had no staining problems. And because we weren’t getting staining on the teeth, the compliance has been a lot better. Even though it tastes a little like swimming pool water.

Obviously that meant myself and the hygienist didn’t have to spend time removing stains. And with Clinisept+, patients weren’t complaining of a change in taste sensation, which is a common problem with other mouthwashes.

The results are very good. We had very nice soft tissue healing with Clinisept+. Although it’s very hard to judge if the soft tissue healing is because of the patient or the mouthwash. But patient feedback has been good.

So it’s now routine. And, because Clinisept+ is a highly effective antimicrobial we have recently been getting all patients to rinse their mouth with it prior to any form of dental treatment, which we started off doing prior to implant treatment. The idea being it just lowers the bacterial load in the mouth, helping to improve patient outcomes.

Another benefit when using Clinisept+ prior to and after tooth extractions is that I’ve noticed a reduction in the incidence of dry sockets.

We’ve also started using it for crown and bridge work where we soak components such as implant healing caps etc in Clinisept+ as an additional level of protection.

Do you use Clinisept+ Mouthwash on all patients in the surgery?

We don’t recommended it as a routine mouthwash for all patients. But for the patients that have a clinical need, then definitely we recommend it.

We charge them a set fee for perio treatment, and we give it to them included in the fee.

What were the reasons you switched to using Clinisept+?

I was after something that I could use that wouldn’t stain teeth.

Implant patients who have had veneers, you do not want them to experience staining. So I was after something that was effective, but which has no staining properties. Clinisept+ fit the bill.

How long do you recommend patients use Clinisept+ Mouthwash for?

We’d normally recommend two weeks, which is how long a surgical site takes to heal suitably. Sometimes longer if they’ve had secondary infections or a dry socket.

After that we’re quite happy for them to use it on a regular basis really if they wish to.

Do you feel like Clinisept+ has had much of an impact on your practice and patient outcomes?

I think it has had a positive effect because we’re spending less time removing stains and patient compliance is fine, so yes certainly.

It’s another tool in the box. It just helps to compile a bigger picture. It shores up the house of cards that is dentistry.

Which benefits do you usually see, or do your patients report, when a patient uses Clinisept+ mouthwash verses other mouthwashes?

  • Accelerated recovery following treatment
  • Reduced incidence of infections/complications
  • Reduced patient discomfort
  • No teeth staining
  • Improved gum health
  • Better user compliance.

Are there any other benefits to using Clinisept that you’ve experienced?

The other thing I use it for is before we put cannulas in. We just use it as a surface decontamination. So just to clean the skin.

Before implant placement we just get a bit of Clinisept and just wipe the area. And before we put a cannula in the arm, we would just wipe the area. I think they approve it for that.

That is one of the recognised applications for it, before fillers you can just clean the face.

What are the main reason that you recommend the use of Clinisept+ Mouthwash to your patients?

No staining, less pain after surgery and improved soft tissue healing, which lets me put the implant in sooner. That’s probably why I like it so much. It speeds up the healing.

Who else recommends Clinisept?
